Concussion Care

At Symphony we offer the complete cycle of concussion care from education thru treatment

The days of sitting in a dark room until your symptoms are gone is in the past! Today, research supports a graduated active recovery. At Symphony we offer the complete cycle of concussion care from education thru treatment.

Our multi-disciplinary team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical counsellors,  speech pathologists  are passionate about concussion and guiding through your recovery as quickly as possible.  We recognize that your recovery could also require services outside of our team ~ in which case we will connect you with our community colleague's in chiropractic, neuro optometry and more.

A concussion is a form of brain injury that can affect the functioning of your brain.  Contrary to some thoughts, you do not actually need to hit your head or lose consciousness to be diagnosed with a concussion.   People may have a concussion and not realize it.

Concussion Signs & Symptoms

As concussions are a diffuse brain injury many different functions of the brain can be affected. At Symphony if you are experiencing the following signs & symptoms we can help you on your rehab journey:

  • fuzzy or blurry vision
  • dizziness
  • balance problems
  • fatigue
  • headaches
  • altered head or facial sensations
  • word finding & language issues
  • difficulty thinking clearly
  • feeling "slowed down"
  • difficulty concentrating or remembering new information
  • emotional challenges
  • sleep issues

"Some of these symptoms may appear right away, while others may not be noticed for days or months after the injury, or until the person starts resuming their everyday life and more demands are placed upon them".

~ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Acute Concussion Treatment

Most concussions resolve with minimal treatment if cared for properly from the onset. Research supports working with a health practitioner trained in concussion treatment early to ensure that your brain recovers properly as opposed to simply compensating!

Acute Concussion Care Sessions may involve:

  • Assessment to determine areas of decompensation and understanding of current symptoms
  • Education on rest and appropriate re-integration of activity
  • Working with the team on gradual re-introduction of aerobic activity as soon as 4 days after your concussion
  • Monitoring and check-in's with our FDA approved app to ensure your recovery is on the right path
  • Getting you back to school, to sport, to work, to life

Just because your symptoms have resolved does not mean you are fully recovered!

Prolonged Concussion Symptoms (or postconcussion syndrome)

If you are still experiencing symptoms as described above 4 weeks after your concussion an in-depth assessment is recommended.   At this further stage in concussion rehab your treatment plan may involve:

  • aerobic exercise and how to gradually re-introduce activity

  • vestibular rehab
  • vision rehab
  • manual therapy
  • increasing cognitive load
  • integration of all systems

Lee Stone. Head Coach & GM Campbell River Storm Hockey Team

"As a coach brain injuries are a tricky subject that in many ways are still unknown.  Natasha & her team at Symphony Rehab go above and beyond to create an action plan for not just return to play but full recovery in all aspects.

Her communication with the player and coach put everyone on the same page.  I recommend any athlete that has a concussion, no matter how minor, to visit Natasha & her team to feel confident in returning to action at 100%!"

Dre. Symphony Client

"Symphony has been our answers from the creator. I will be forever grateful for finding Natasha.  I truly believe that I would not have got my vibrant 4 year old back had Natasha not taken her on & worked hard with us to help my daughter bounce back from this second & scary concussion.

Natasha knew exactly what she needed to do for my daughter and seeing the difference in her from start to finish has been truly amazing.

I will always recommend Symphony every chance I get."

Neurological Rehab

After hard work in in-patient rehab you are leaving the hospital team and entering a new world.  Just because you're discharged though doesn't mean your journey stops - you've got goals you're still reaching for!

Or perhaps, you're still trying to process the news the neurologist shared with you last week. You're trying to understand what this new diagnosis means for you and your family... and honestly, the shock hasn't quite worn off yet.

Are your emotions on a bit of a rollercoaster as you try to understand what life will be like?

Whether you are recovering from a stroke, a spinal cord injury or have been diagnosed with a progressive neurological disorder (ie. Parkinson's, MS) We are here to help!

Our brains are dynamic - not static- they have the ability to reorganize, restructure and change if they are challenged sufficiently.

Neurological Physiotherapists have additional expertise in understanding your nervous system and the role it plays in your movement and function.  Our goal is to help you stay healthy, strong and doing the things you love to do.

Our Therapists have post graduate training in the Bobath Concept for neurological assessment & treatment as well as Clinical Neuroscience.  The concepts are built around current neuroscience and rehabilitative research and science ~ it is not a formula ~ but a problem solving approach in which the therapists are trained in the analysis of the components of your nervous system movement and movement dysfunction.  It utilizes elements of postural control, selective movement, facilitation, coordination of movement and sensory information and it's role in your function.  Every treatment is focused on the clients individualized presentation and their goals.

Individuals whom have had a stroke, a spinal cord injury, a brain injury, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, or cerebral palsy and any other neurological diagnosis can utilize our neuro rehab services.

We utilize the principles of neuroplasticity to create a novel experience and lasting change in your nervous system & function.

There are many ways to create a unique experience in your rehab - some of which include utilizing our technology!  Symphony is the only clinic on Vancouver Island and most of BC to employ tools such as :

Senaptec * Neurosensory Integrator * Virtualis Virtual Reality * Interactive Metronome  * Lite Gait Body -Weight Support (and more) into your treatment plans

Dan. Symphony Stroke Recovery Client

IMS | Acupuncture

Chronic muscle tension can contribute to so many of those aches and pains you feel in your day.  It could be contributing to your headaches, that aching pain, or that tender deep muscles that you know if you poke will send you through the ceiling.

IMS (otherwise called Intramuscular Stimulation) is a form of dry needling that when inserted will cause the muscle to twitch.  This contraction will allow the muscle to relax, increase blood flow to the area and promote healing.

Acupuncture is a form of dry needling originating in Eastern Medicine.  Needles are places in very specific acupuncture points based on your presentation which stimulates your natural pain relievers, promotes increased blood flow and circulation to the area and decreases pain & muscle tension.

Telehealth

Offering telehealth one:one services since 2017 we love how it can enhance your care!

Telehealth allows us the ability to observe you in your own environment, to save you time and cost in travel, to access care from anywhere in BC & the Northwest Territories.

We practice a hybrid model at Symphony - which simply means your care can involve a blend of telehealth & in person sessions or fully telehealth.

Who is telehealth appropriate for?

The short answer - almost everyone!  Our practitioners have a wealth of knowledge and skills to offer you.

This could include (but is not limited too):

  • Parents juggling schedules
  • Professionals whom can't leave the office for a lengthy period of time
  • Someone living in a remote community
  • Weather strikes, and you're snowed in
  • Your community lacks specialty services
  • Consultations

There will alway remain circumstances where an in person visit is required ~ but research is continuing to show us that virtual visits can address and treat the same needs, and to the same level of care, for many conditions that an in person session can.
